Sheffield captures first hoops victory

After falling to 0-9 on the season on Monday in a home loss to undefeated Elk County Catholic, Sheffield’s boys basketball team bounced back to hold off host Kane, 35-30, on Wednesday for the Wolverines’ first win of the season.

Sheffield also bounced back from a scoreless third quarter.

“The defensive effort was fantastic tonight and I think Monday was a good stepping stone into where we needed to be for tonight,” said Sheffield coach Jordan Copley. “Coming out in the third, I talked to them about possessing the ball and how important it is to limit the turnovers. Unfortunately, we had eight in the third quarter. Playing with a lead is hard and we seemed to make it harder in the third. In the fourth quarter, we were able to stabilize a little better and James (Chapman) and Nakes (Holsey) made some huge free throws to maintain a two-score gap.”

Kane (4-7) had won four of its last five games, including a 30-point victory over the same Wolverines on Dec. 28 at Sheffield’s own holiday tournament.

“The key was learning from our mistakes from the first game,” said Copley, “and not turning the ball over 28 times. We were able to make adjustments to the press and control the tempo. Colby (Barr), Nakes, and LeShawn (Williams) were fantastic on the boards.”

Williams scored 8 of his game-high 14 points in Sheffield’s 17-5 second quarter. The Wolverines went into halftime with a 24-9 lead and, despite a scoreless third quarter, led by nine points after three.

Williams added 14 rebounds as well. Holsey finished with 7 points and eight rebounds and Barr added 5 points and 10 boards.

“Jack (Chapman) did a great job of getting down the floor on those rebounds and finishing at the hoop,” said Copley. “It was a great team win tonight.”

BRADFORD — Peyton Wotorson hit five of Warren’s nine 3-pointers in a 48-33 win over Bradford.

Three of Wotorson’s treys came in the Lady Dragons’ 16-7 first quarter.

“The girls did a great job again on the defensive end of the floor and were in total rhythm tonight on the offensive end,” said Warren coach Jenny Phillips, whose Dragons improve to 6-5 with their second win of the week. “We knew we were going to be playing against a zone defense and made sure that we were patient and moved the ball around in order to get the best shot opportunity. Peyton Wotorson was absolutely lights out tonight.”

Wotorson finished with a game-high 21 points and teammate Alyssa Farr added 12.

“Everyone that got minutes executed on both ends of the floor,” said Phillips. “It was a total team win tonight.”
