Warren girls can’t contain Prep
ERIE — Cathedral Prep’s girls basketball team is 2-0 in Region 7 after a 61-34 win on Thursday over visiting Warren.
Prep jumped out to a 19-6 first quarter and coasted before a 16-4 fourth put the Dragons away.
“Going into the fourth quarter, we were only down 15,” said Warren coach Jenny Phillips, whose Dragons are 0-2 in Region 7. “We mainly played them (with) a 2-3 zone to try to control their D1 recruit in the paint. The hard part about a zone is making sure that you’re also covering any outside shooters. Unfortunately, in the fourth, their shooters got the best of us.”
Prep 6-foot-2 senior Addie Biel had 9 of the Lady Ramblers’ 19 points in the first quarter and finished with a team-high 20.
“They’re a good team and usually always are,” said Phillips. “They have a 6-2 center that’s committed to Appalachian State, and she’s been someone we’ve had to battle for four years. My goal going into tonight was as it is every game; you go out and you give me 110% and you come out of the game a better player than you were going in. And the girls did just that.”
Warren (6-10 overall) stayed with Prep in the middle quarters. Junior Peyton Wotorson had all 11 points for the Dragons in the second quarter and 10 in a 13-12 Warren third. She finished with 21 points and nine field goals. Alyssa Farr had 4 points, and Alana Stuart and Emily Davidson had 3 apiece.
Prep (9-6) had five players score at least 9 points.
