Warren girls fall short of Huskies

HARBORCREEK — Warren’s girls basketball team played whistle to whistle against Harbor Creek, falling by one point, 52-51, on Saturday at Harbor Creek High School.

Down by four, Emma Roell hit a 3-pointer, but Warren ran out of time.

“Harbor Creek is definitely a team you need to play pretty closely to have a chance,” said Warren coach Jenny Phillips, whose Dragons have lost three straight to stand at 6-8. “They (Huskies) stand at 13-1 for a reason (with 10 straight wins). For the majority of the game, we were trading the lead back and forth with our biggest lead by eight coming in the third quarter. It really came down to the little things for us — making our free throws and rebounding on both ends of the floor.

“Sure, you make mistakes here and there on both ends of the floor, but when push comes to shove, it’s the big ‘little things’ that really matter in a game this close,” added Phillips. “Peyton (Wotorson) was tasked to defend their best player and I thought she played her well. We knew she would get her points, but it was pretty clear that Peyton frustrated her all day.”

Brooke Przybylski was 4 for 5 at the free-throw line for the Huskies and finished with 14 of her game-high 20 points in the second half; that’s about her average per game. Teammates Arianna Denning and Elise Benim added 10 points apiece.

“Alana Stuart also played a great game on both ends, really shining on the offensive end in the second half,” said Phillips. “She hit really big shots that swung the momentum and energized our team in the third quarter.”

Warren’s Stuart finished with a team-high 16 points, and 8 of those were in the third. Wotorson ended with 12 points and Alyssa Farr 11. Emily Davidson and Roell added 5 apiece.

“We knew it was going to be a tough game and prepared as best we could, making sure we knew how they would handle themselves on the offense and defensive sides of the floor,” said Phillips. “Even when you prepare, you still have to be able to adjust to other things that they may throw at you. I thought our team played extremely well today and handled themselves with composure. … Certainly, you always want to come out on top, but we played well, learned new things about our team, and coming into region play, it will only be to our benefit.”
