Warren takes Region 5 battle at Fort LeBoeuf
WATERFORD — In a battle of 6-1 Region 5 boys basketball teams, Warren avenged an early-season loss to Fort LeBoeuf with a 57-39 road win Friday at Fort LeBoeuf High School.
Chase Sitler had 9 points and Logan Crissey 6 in Warren’s 19-7 third quarter that upped a 29-20 halftime lead to 21 points.
“The first time we played them was the worst game we’ve played all year, not even close when we watched the film,” said Warren coach Jeff Berdine, whose Dragons are 10-3 overall and 7-1 in the region. The Bison are now 13-3 and 6-2.
“Process, progress, payoff,” Berdine said. “I think it was just us learning to play together.”
In LeBoeuf’s 52-50 win at Warren Area High School in the Dragons’ third game of the season to fall to 1-2, Carson Papay finished with six 3-pointers and a game-high 23 points. The Bison scored double-digit points in every quarter. On Friday, Papay led Fort LeBoeuf with only 10 points, and Warren held the Bison to 5 points in the second quarter and 7 in the third.
“(We) held them under 40,” said Berdine. “Anytime you do that, you have a good chance of winning.”
With Crissey in early foul trouble, Warren used balanced scoring in a 17-15 first quarter. Leihden Wotorson had 6 points, Chase Sitler 4, Lucas Thrift 3, and Tage Wyman and Allen Eaton 2 each in the first.
Landon Wood came off the bench to score 4 points in Warren’s 12-5 defensive second quarter. Wood also hit 3-of-4 free throws down the stretch when LeBoeuf was forced to foul. After scoring 25 points in Warren’s 60-46 junior varsity victory earlier on Friday, the sophomore added 9 points in limited varsity time.
Sitler led the Dragons with 17 points, Wotorson had 9, Crissey and Thrift 7 each, and Grady Corey 4.
