UNION CITY — Youngsville’s junior high wrestling team traveled to Union City High School for the third annual Ed Margie Memorial Junior High tournament.

The Eagles had a good day on the mat, finishing sixth out of 13 teams in the team race.

The tournament is named after the late Ed Margie, who led the Bears wrestling program from 1976 until his untimely death in 2012.

“I have the utmost respect for Coach Margie. He was a wonderful human and coach. He put out some very tough wrestlers year in and year out. He and his wife were my wife’s neighbors when she was growing up. So it was a no-brainer to attend this tournament when we were invited by Coach Mitcham.” said Youngsville coach Tim Suydan.

The Eagles’ outing was highlighted by dominant performances from Tucker Sanford and Collin Havers. Both Sanford and Havers scored bonus points in all of their matches en route to winning the 138 pound and 155 pound weight classes, respectively.

Sanford began his day by scoring a pin in just 9 seconds over Conneaut’s Luke Hans. Sanford picked up another pin in the semifinals over Saegertown’s Jaxton Amy. Sanford’s 53-second pin of Amy would be the longest he spent on the mat all day as Sanford pinned Harbor Creek’s Cameron Cadden in the finals in just 31 seconds.

Havers kicked off his day with a quick 15-0 technical fall over Eisenhower’s Luke Johnson. Havers followed up that effort with yet another 15-0 technical fall. This time it came against Harbor Creek’s Levi Robinson. In the semifinals, Havers made quick work of Corry’s Kayden Doutt, pinning the Beaver in just 52 seconds. In the finals, Havers pinned Saegertown’s Connor Bradshaw in just 1:01 to claim the 155-pound title.

Johnathan Sullivan was another place winner for the Eagles as he took third in the 170-pound weight class. Sullivan began his day with a loss to McDowell’s Jaxson Czarnecki, but rebounded with back-to-back pins over Union City’s Keith Steinbaugh and Corry’s Sunjay Jones, respectively. In the consolation finals, Sullivan met Cochranton’s Aden Carter. Sullivan was down 2-0 heading into the third period before scoring a reversal that sent the Cardinal to his back and Sullivan picked up the fall to win bronze.

Mack Eighmey was the fourth and final placewinner for the Eagles. Eighmey was fourth in the 210-250-pound weight class. Eighmey’s first match was arguably his most entertaining as he and Franklin’s Mikeal Winters battled back and forth before Winters picked up the fall late into the second period.

Also picking up wins for the Eagles were Jacob Battko (three wins), McKenzie Hodak (two wins), Brantley Coleson (two wins), Ben Blauser (two wins) and Khloe Rulander (one win).

“Considering we were down two starters, it wasn’t a bad outing for us,” said Suydan “We had a couple of kids whose tournaments ended prematurely due to injuries. I don’t think either one is particularly serious as both of the kids were more upset about the fact that they had to bow out than anything else. We don’t have any dual meets this week so there will be plenty of time for them to get healthy anyhow. I’m hopeful to get one or both of our injured wrestlers back this week, but time will tell.”

The Eagles will be back in action Saturday at the Corry JV/Junior High Tournament.

Starting at $2.99/week.
