SMETHPORT — With one win on the season and only three games left, in the last season of varsity boys basketball at Sheffield High School, head coach Jordan Copley said the goal was to play the type of game he knows the Wolverines can play.

Thursday night was one of those games in a 62-54 win at Smethport.

Though only Sheffield’s second win of the season, it will rank as one of senior Colby Barr’s top moments in the sport. He finished with a career-high 34 points, including 14 in Sheffield’s 16-7 first quarter that sent them on their way.

“It was a great game,” said Barr. “We all worked together and we just wanted that ‘W,'” said Barr.

Copley has been on Barr to go to the hoop more. “Yes, he’s been telling me that all season,” said Barr.

“Played amazing,” added Copley, whose Wolverines are now 2-16 overall. “Finally took the ball to the hoop and finished in transition.”

Barr had 10 points and Lashawn Williams 7 in the fourth quarter. Williams finished with 17 points. The Wolverines needed every point with Smethport (2-18) outscoring Sheffield 26-20 in the fourth, and that includes six 3-pointers. 

“These kids deserved it,” said Copley. “They never stop trying and working. I can’t be more proud of the kids. Despite all the issues we face night in and night out, they don’t stop working, fighting. Tonight they got out to a hot start and were able to maintain a lead to get the win.”

Colin Okerlund hit three of his four 3-pointers in the final quarter and finished with 23 points for two-win Smethport. Cole Burdick added 18 — six 3-pointers — in the loss.
