Historic night
Warren girls host first wrestling match; boys post win vs. Bradford
In a historic night for Warren wrestling, it all came down to senior Conner Zaffino at 160 pounds in the boys match.
With a forfeit win looming in the final match with visiting Bradford on Wednesday at Warren Area High School, Zaffino would have to earn at least a technical fall for 5 team points and a 35-34 victory.
“In a match that we let get away from us tonight, Conner got it done, needing a tech. fall or a pin,” said Warren coach Glenn Baldensperger. “He secured the tech. fall and brought home the victory. That’s the type of stuff that makes it all worth it.”
Zaffino ended the night’s wrestling on the mat with a 16-0, second-period win over Bradford’s Braydon Wells.
However, it was a historic night because, despite only two girls’ matches held, Warren’s girls wrestling team had its first-ever home match with both Madilyn Dikun and Kendall Moore securing pins for the Lady Dragons.
Warren’s boys team didn’t have it so easy on this night as every point counted.
Sebastian Oyola started things by bumping up to 189 pounds for a 2-1 decision that would loom large. Joe Krall had a major decision win (14-2) at 215 for necessary points, and teammate Tyson Harkins decked his opponent in 28 seconds at heavyweight.
Up 13-0 on the scoreboard, the Dragons would later trail 16-13 before senior Adika Fiscus did what he does, earning his 81st career win with a 17-1 technical-fall victory at 127 pounds.
Another senior, Cam Williams, won his 14th match of the season with a first-period pin at 139, but two straight Bradford pins put the Warren team in a 34-24 hole.
Zaffino’s technical fall plus the Colby Zinger forfeit win at 172 gave Warren (6-7) 11 team points and the 1-point win over Bradford (4-11).
