Lady Dragons win at DuBois

DUBOIS — Warren’s girls basketball team continued to “turn it up” last week in a 53-28 win over DuBois on Saturday morning at DuBois Area High School.

“I think by not focusing so much on how tough the games and opponents are, and rather focusing on playing together and getting back to the joy of the game, is how they have been able to turn it up these last couple games,” said Warren coach Jenny Phillips, whose Dragons won their second straight following six losses in a row.

“Pressure defense, taking care of the ball and being patient on offense and rebounding,” she said of the keys. “(DuBois is) a little taller than we are, so we had to make sure we hit the boards well. We also wanted to work on our defensive sets, so we were very diligent in switching up our defense frequently to keep them guessing coming down the floor. It was an early game and the girls were fired up from the start.”

Alyssa Farr and Emma Roell had 6 points each, and Alana Stuart 5, in Warren’s 19-5 first quarter.

Peyton Wotorson finished with 15 points for Warren (8-11), Stuart and Roell 13 each, and Farr 12.

Audrey Kennis led DuBois (5-15) with 9 points.

“We play (Cathedral) Prep in another region game on Monday and want to be sure we worked on some of our game plan for that,” said Phillips. “It’s been a hard season for sure — going up to 6A we knew was going to be a challenge. After our first round of region games, we talked and looked back on the season so far; I asked the girls to reflect on a time they were really happy during the season. As you can imagine, lots of answers were about games we fought hard and came out with a win. Those games were full of joy… joy playing together as a team and working through the tough times together. I told the girls that each time they step out on that floor, whether it’s practice or games, they need to think about why they play basketball and find the joy in the game. And, of course, focus on defense.”
