Mercyhurst Prep snaps Warren’s winning streak
ERIE — Mercyhurst Prep — with eight first-half 3-pointers — jumped out to a 10-point halftime lead and held off Warren’s boys basketball team, 57-52, on Saturday at Mercyhurst Preparatory School.
After scoring 36 points against visiting Eisenhower on Friday night, Tanner Ashton had four first-half 3-pointers for the Lakers. Warren held Mercyhurst Prep’s leading scorer without a field goal in the second half, but Alex Manendo had three key buckets down the stretch to hold off the Dragons, who had won five in a row. Mercyhurst Prep has won nine straight.
“We dug ourselves a hole with a slow offensive second quarter,” said Warren coach Jeff Berdine, whose Dragons played their third straight Friday-Saturday back-to-back games. “We got outscored 16-8 as they made eight first-half threes, which was exactly what we saw on film from them. We had a lot of good looks in the second quarter, just couldn’t get any of them to go.
“I felt we played much better on both ends of the floor in the second half,” he said, “outscoring them 31-26. Unfortunately, they made some big buckets down the stretch. Manendo had 6 points in the fourth, all at key times when we needed stops.”
Logan Crissey finished with a game-high 21 points for Warren (13-4). Mercyhurst Prep (13-5) was led by Ashton’s 16 and Manendo’s 14.
“I felt we needed this game to get refocused for next week, which has huge region ramifications with Franklin Tuesday at home and then Oil City on the road Friday,” said Berdine.
Earlier on Saturday, Charlie Blum had 14 points in Warren’s 36-30 junior varsity loss to Mercyhurst Prep.
