Warren girls earn 1st region victory

ERIE — After a 20-point home loss to Erie High on Jan. 27, Warren’s girls basketball team used a 16-9 fourth quarter on Thursday to beat the Royals 58-55 for the Dragons’ first Region 7 win.

“To lose by 20 the first time we played them, and to come in tonight and play like we did, I’m so proud of the effort each girl put in tonight,” said Warren coach Jenny Phillips, whose Dragons are 1-3 in the region. “We truly played like a team, with everyone contributing.”

Erie is 2-2 in Region 7.

“At the beginning of the fourth, we were down by three or four and in the timeout I just told the girls to just stick to the game plan — go out, play good defense, rebound and be patient on offense, getting the best look we can,” added Phillips. “It was pretty back and forth for the most part in the fourth, and then we got some really good defensive stops and we were able to execute on the offensive end.”

Peyton Wotorson hit two 3-pointers and scored 9 of her 12 points in the fourth, Alyssa Farr added 4 points in the quarter and Emma Roell 3.

Farr led the Dragons in scoring with 17 points, including four 3-pointers and 13 points in Warren’s 33-26 first half.

The Dragons connected on eight treys in the first half with Alana Stuart adding two and 10 points and Roell two and 8 points.

Erie stormed back with a 20-9 third quarter for a 46-42 lead entering the fourth.

“We needed to match their physicality, rebound, and take care of the ball and the girls did just that,” said Phillips. “We certainly had our lapses here and there, but we stayed focused and played so well as a team, no matter who was on the floor. It was a total team effort; each player hit key shots when we needed and never gave up.”

Roell and Stuart finished with 13 points each as four Dragons scored in double figures.

Deaja Williams had 25 of Erie’s 53 points, including 5 or 9 fourth-quarter points.

“Defense was the key tonight,” said Phillips. “I really stressed that during our practices to prepare.”

Adison Cullers had 11 points, Emma Gray 7, and Abby Roell 4 in Warren’s 22-19 junior varsity win.
