Eagles’ rally comes up short to Oswayo Valley
SHINGLEHOUSE — A valiant comeback effort came up one run short in Youngsville’s 8-7 loss to Oswayo Valley on a rainy Friday afternoon in Shinglehouse.
The Eagles (1-2) entered the seventh inning trailing 8-2 and scored five times before leaving the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position.
Early in Friday’s contest, the Green Wave were doing their damage with two outs. Oswayo scored its first two runs on a two-out single in the first inning and scored twice more in the second taking advantage of two fielding errors and three walks from the Youngsville defense.
Youngsville got on the board in the top of the fourth when Cole Johnson led off with a single and scored on a deep triple from David Manning. Moments later, Manning scored on Dylan DePasquale’s RBI groundout to cut the Oswayo Valley advantage to 4-2.
Over its next two at-bats, Oswayo went back to work on carving out a comfortable advantage. The Green Wave scored twice in the fourth and twice in the fifth and appeared to be cruising to a win with an 8-2 lead after six innings.
The Eagles weren’t done yet.
Carsyn Branstrom and Logan King led off the seventh with walks and Branstrom scored on Talon Mesel’s single to cut the deficit to 8-3. Johnson was up next and crushed a double to left that brought home King and Mesel and made it 8-5.
Before the first out of the inning, Johnson was able to race home on a passed ball and with three outs left to work with, Youngsville trailed by just two.
After out number one, Josh Pikna reached on an error and Bryce Spinks drew a walk to put the tying run aboard. The second out of the inning followed and the Eagles were down to their final out.
Aaden Patch walked and Pikna was able to reach home on a passed ball that made it a one-run game. Branstrom drew another walk to load the bases and put the tying run 90 feet away but Oswayo Valley responded with a strikeout to end the game.
The Eagles were playing Friday without the services of starting shortstop James Johnson as well as coach Eddie Dorunda who was ejected in controversial fashion from last Monday’s win over Jamestown(PA) and was serving a one-game suspension.
Both Johnson and Dorunda plan to be back in the mix on Monday when the Eagles travel to Class AAA Corry. A Youngsville rematch with Oswayo Valley is scheduled for Wednesday at Davis Street Field in Youngsville.
