Knights, Eagles suffer setbacks
TITUSVILLE — The Eisenhower softball team hit the road Thursday and took an early lead, but couldn’t keep up with and ultimately fell to Titusville 15-5.
The Knights’ Tracey Jakubczak started off the scoring in the first inning when she drew a bases-loaded walk and Morgan Zaffino plated two runs on a fielder’s choice.
The Rockets tied the score at 3-3 in the third inning on a home run by Peyton Gricks, but Eisenhower retook the lead when Aliza Olsen smacked an RBI single.
Titusville broke the game open by scoring six runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings and the Knights were held scoreless the rest of the way.
Samantha Childs took the loss for Eisenhower (0-4), allowing seven hits and five earned runs. She struck out two and walked six. Childs and Alexis Pascuzzi led the Knights’ offense with two hits apiece.
Rich Pascuzzi, “Titusville is a good team and we battled back to take the lead into the fifth inning,” Eisenhower head coach Rich Pascuzzi said. “We just lost focus. We strung hits together and we were patient at the plate. We just have to learn to finish.”
YOUNGSVILLE FALLS
YOUNGSVILLE — Union-AC Valley scored five runs or more in three consecutive innings during a 16-0 softball victory over the Youngsville Eagles in softball action Thursday at Youngsville High School.
The Eagles (0-1) played great defense early in the contest and had runners in scoring position in each of their first two times up to bat. They narrowly missed out on taking an early lead, and in the third inning, Union finally broke through in a big way.
The Falcon Knights took advantage of four Youngsville errors in the top of the third and added a two-run homer from Alivya Hartzell to take a 6-0 lead.
The runs kept coming in the fourth, including a three-run homer from Maddy DeHart, and the final five runs came in the fifth highlighted by a two-run triple from Emerson Stevens.
Youngsville nearly broke up the shutout in the bottom of the fifth when junior Hailey Gray hit a towering fly ball over the left fielder. Gray attempted to stretch a triple into a home run and was thrown out at the plate, stymying the threat.
The Eagles will look for their first victory of the season Tuesday when they welcome Rocky Grove to Youngsville High School.
