Manning tosses 15K gem for Youngsville

JAMESTOWN — Coming off an 18-0 loss to Kane on Friday and facing playing without standout shortstop James Johnson, the Youngsville Eagles grew up quickly Monday and came away with a 5-3 road victory over Jamestown.

David Manning struck out 15 batters in a complete-game gem and the Eagles’ bats did just enough to propel Youngsville to its first victory of the young season.

“It was nice to see the guys get the win and continue to make improvements,” said Youngsville coach Eddie Dorunda.

The Muskies actually struck first Monday, needing just two batters to take a 1-0 lead. Danner Babcock doubled and soon scored on Connor Pressler’s RBI single to get the hosts on the board.

Youngsville (1-1) responded with a run in the top of the second. Josh Pikna led off with a single and moved to second on a groundout from Bryce Spinks. Pikna would then move to third on a passed ball and score on an RBI groundout from Dylan Depasquale to tie the game.

Things remained tied until the bottom of the third when Jamestown went back ahead by a run. Pressler was again responsible for the tally, bringing home Babcock on a sacrifice fly out to Youngsville left fielder Aaden Patch.

In the fourth, the Eagles would take their first lead of the season.

Cole Johnson singled to lead off the inning and Manning drove him home with an RBI double. Pikna then delivered an RBI single that scored Manning and put the Eagles on top, 3-2.

The lead was extended with a little two-out magic in the fifth. Talon Mesel singled with two outs and scored when Johnson reached on an error, making it 4-2.

The two-run advantage held until the bottom of the sixth and once more it was Pressler in the middle of things. He tripled to lead off the inning and scored when teammate Nolan Herbold reached on an error.

With the Muskies within one, Manning clamped down on the mound, striking out the side and making sure the damage was limited, and his Eagles maintained the lead.

Youngsville manufactured an insurance run in the seventh to cushion its lead. Carsyn Branstrom walked, stole second and moved to third on an error before scoring on an RBI hit from Mesel.

Manning set the Muskies down in order in the bottom of the seventh, striking out Jamestown’s Josh Pashakarnis on his 100th pitch of the night to end the game.

“Dylan (Depasquale) clutched up and put the ball into play for a big run early and Josh (Pikna) swung the bat well all night in the four spot,” said Dorunda. “Other than that, it was pretty much a pitcher’s duel. David was mixing it up well and I thought Cole did a great job for him behind the plate.”

The Eagles will look to make it two in a row Wednesday when they host Northwestern at Davis Street Field in Youngsville.
