Titusville rallies for 14-13 win over Warren

TITUSVILLE — Titusville scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to hand Warren a 14-13 season-opening loss on Friday, spoiling a monster day at the plate from Eli Snyder.

Warren led 8-0 in the third inning, 9-3 in the fifth, and 13-6 in the sixth before the Rockets scored eight runs over the final two innings. In fact, Titusville scored three runs in the fifth, three in the sixth, and five in the seventh.

New Warren coach Johnny White, whose Dragons committed seven errors to Titusville’s three, said this is a perfect example of how a game can get away from you if you don’t take care of the little things.

“In the bottom of the seventh, we had several plays that should’ve been made in the field,” said White. “Even with other factors that happen around us that we can’t control, we allowed too many mistakes in the field. Part of that is being inside for so long, (but) most of it is understanding that these mistakes can’t happen in baseball, so we’re able to handle the things we can’t control. The fifth, sixth, and seventh innings were just mistake-heavy innings on the defensive side of the field. The boys understand that, and when we go back to work (Saturday) morning, we’re going to be a better team for it.”

Carter Cochran started on the hill for Warren, allowing four runs — one earned — over 4-1/3 innings. He struck out four, allowing six hits and one walk. He left with a lead.

“As far as positives go, there’s a ton of them — 19 or more baserunners offensively is incredible, especially against a good team like that,” said White. “We put together good at bats throughout the entire lineup and put the ball in play.

“(Carter) threw a great game to start today,” added White. “He pounded the zone and put us in the best position to win. We brought Tage (Wyman) in at the end and he did a great job on the mound. He did literally everything he was supposed to in that situation and we didn’t capitalize. Add in Tage’s two hits and that’s a great game for him.

“I thought Broc Bryan did very well today,” said White. “He was on base three times, had to come (on pitching) in relief in a tight spot and gave us solid innings on the mound that a freshman normally wouldn’t have to do. He stepped up big today.

“Obviously, you can’t talk about the game today without mentioning Eli Snyder,” said White. “When you go 4-for-5 with four runs scored, two doubles, and a grand slam, you would expect to win the baseball game. You would be hard-pressed to find a better stat line than that one. Absolute monster game from that kid today and you should expect to see a lot more of it.”

Snyder had four of Warren’s seven hits.

Titusville’s Jaxon Covell was 4-for-4 with two doubles and four runs scored, and teammate Brett Schmidt had three hits and four RBI. Titusville had 16 hits and 10 walks in the comeback win.

“This one hurts right now, but we’ll look back on it later in the season and might even see it as a good thing,” said White. “We can absolutely compete with good teams in the district, but if we don’t take care of the little things — we can keep a running count of how many times I use that phrase each year, it won’t matter by the time we get to the seventh inning.”
