Dragons tennis wins region opener 4-1
MEADVILLE — Warren’s boys tennis team topped Meadville, 4-1, on Friday in its first region matchup of the season.
“This was the first time we have played Meadville in a while, so we were not sure what to expect going into this; all we knew was it was a key AAA region matchup and a must win,” said Warren coach Thomas Pellegrino. “We found out pretty quickly they had a solid team and some strong singles players.”
At first singles, Warren’s Adam Strandburg suffered his first loss of the season to Lucas Luteran, 3-6, 4-6.
“Lucas was an amazing athlete that managed to get just about every ball back, making it challenging for Adam to close out games and forcing him to hit some bigger shots,” said Pellegrino. “Adam played well, but Lucas just outlasted him today.”
In second singles, Warren’s Lucas Thrift defeated Kevin Elwell, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3).
“This was a nice win from Lucas,” said Pellegrino. “Kevin has a very persistent game that most players tend to struggle with as it doesn’t give you much to work with and forces you to close out points at the net. Lucas stuck to the game plan and executed by moving his opponent off the court and attacking the ball early.”
In third singles, Brody Alexander picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win over Greg Sklenar.
“This match was a bit tighter than the scores might show, but Brody was able to stretch the lead at 3-2 in both sets with some big service games and steady play from the baseline,” said Pellegrino.
In doubles action, the pair of Jack Lynds and Ben Scott picked up a 6-1, 7-6 (7-2) win over Brooke Hart and Patrick Machoney.
Making their varsity debut, the freshmen duo of Gabe Dougherty and Yaman Kolasinli defeated Michael Mangine and Elijah Miller, 6-2, 6-0.
“The boys were excited for a shot at varsity today and didn’t disappoint,” said Pellegrino. “They both served and returned great and were able to close out points early at the net.
“Overall, Meadville gave us a nice test halfway through the season and we’re happy to kick off region play with a victory,” he said.
Warren (4-0) hosts McDowell at 2:30 p.m. today at Betts Park “for one of the biggest matchups of the year,” added Pellegrino.
