In an early battle for Region 4 track and field supremacy, host Warren swept Seneca on Wednesday at War Memorial Field.

As advertised, both meets were close — Warren’s boys earned an 81-69 win and the Lady Dragons won by an 87-63 score.

“We knew coming into today’s meet we would have a battle on our hands for both our boys and girls teams,” said Warren coach Kevin Dustin. “We challenged both of them with the opportunity to step up and compete to win those close battles in their events that could make that difference in the team score. We are proud to see both teams were up for the challenge.

“Last year, Seneca was the team that kept the boys from earning a region title, so it was nice to come out strong against them this year and get that win,” said Dustin. “For the girls, they picked up where they left off last season.”

In Thursday’s win for the boys, Samuel Lindell won the 800 meters (2:27.64), 1,600 (4:34.94) and 3,200 (10:17.29); Aiden Maier and Scott Nichols finished 1-2 in the 110 hurdles in 18.02 and 18.96 seconds, respectively; Quinn Norris (55.45) and Austin Fiscus (55.54) were 1-2 in the 400; and Max Spiegel (5-10), Trey Carrington (5-8) and Maier (5-6) swept the meet-ending high jump. Warren also won the 4×400 and 4×800 relays.

Key second-place finishes came from Warren’s Tommaso Clemente (100), Nichols (300 hurdles), Norris (800), Kahle Kuzminski (200), Alex Gulnac (discus), Noah Bleech (javelin) and Spiegel (long jump and triple jump).

For the Lady Dragons, Morgan Alexander swept the 800 (2:30.86), 1,600 (5:38.27) and 3,200 (12:30.57). In fact, Warren swept all three distance races. Adison Cullers win the 300 hurdles (51.73), Julia Getner the shot put (28-0.5), Lindsay Madigan triple jump (34-11) and javelin (97-03), Lilly Newton high jump (5-2), and Gracie Page pole vault (8-9). Warren also won the 4×800 relay.

Cullers was second in the 100 hurdles, Riley Evan in the 1,600, Newton the 400, Brynn Norris the 800, Emma Peterson the 3,200, Zoe Rodgers discus, Madigan long jump, Getner high jump, and Hailey Cabisca pole vault.

“We were able to see some athletes develop early and we are getting a better picture of what everyone can do in their events,” said Dustin. “We had a few more District 10 qualifiers and we want to continue to add to that list. We look to continue strong this weekend at Brookville Invite and try to keep it rolling in region competition.”
