Eagles lose pitching duel
UNION CITY — A pitcher’s duel between Youngsville’s David Manning and Union City’s Luke Racop ultimately went the way of the Bears during a 2-1 Union City victory on Thursday.
The first three innings flew by with scoring opportunities few and far between. Manning scattered three hits and struck out four through the first three innings, while Racop didn’t allow a base runner until the top of the fourth when Manning delivered a one-out double.
The Bears’ best chance to break the scoreless tie came in the bottom of the fourth when catcher Trevin Capela led off with a double. However, a groundout to shortstop would keep Capela on second just before he was caught trying to steal third as Eagles catcher Cole Johnson fired a strike to third baseman Braydon Baker for the important out.
The deadlock was finally broken in the fifth as the Eagles were able to pull ahead 1-0. Baker had an infield single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Josh Pikna. However, Baker was soon caught stealing as well leaving Youngsville with two out and nobody on.
Dylan DePasquale was hit by a Racop pitch to extend the inning bringing sophomore Bryce Spinks to the dish. With two strikes, Spinks delivered a double down the right field line to score DePasquale from first and plate the first run of the game.
Spinks’ clutch hit would hold until the bottom of the sixth when the hosts plated a pair of runners to take their first lead of the game.
Luke Wright led off with a walk and moved to second on a passed ball before the first out of the inning. Aiden Shuman followed with a single and the Bears had runners on first and third with only one out.
Shuman quickly stole second and moved to third on a passed ball that also scored Wright to tie the game. Racop followed with an RBI single to center to put the Bears up 2-1 and move them within three outs of a victory.
Racop finished what he started in the top of the seventh, setting the Eagles down in order to slam home the win.
Racop struck out 11 and scattered four hits over seven innings and did not issue a walk. Manning allowed two runs on six hits in six innings and fanned nine.
The Eagles (2-4) return to action Monday when they host Northwestern in a makeup game at Davis Street Field in Youngsville.
