Eagles win on Senior Day

YOUNGSVILLE — Kamden Swearingen pitched a five-hit shutout, Hailey Gray homered and the Youngsville Eagles toppled the Eisenhower Knights, 6-0, on Senior Day on Thursday at Youngsville High School.

Youngsville played perhaps its finest defensive game of the season, getting all but one out in the field of play while committing zero errors.

The first three and a half innings took just 30 minutes to play with each team struggling to find offensive opportunities early. Through its first four at-bats, Eisenhower had mustered just a pair of singles from Riley Gafner and Kendra Danielson while Youngsville had singles from Ireland Abraham and Alyssa Goss in its first three at-bats.

All that changed in the fourth inning.

Caitlyn Pikna led off the bottom of the fourth with a perfectly executed bunt single. Gray was then hit by a pitch and Pikna would score on Abraham’s second single. After taking a 1-0 lead, Marli Rectenwald belted a two-run single to break the game open further.

The inning would end with four runs and was also highlighted by a Peytynn Kirby double and a Desirae Merritt RBI groundout.

Eisenhower appeared poised to get on the board in the fifth inning when Gafner and Aliza Olsen led off the inning with singles. However, Haley Highhouse would line out to Youngsville second baseman Haley Kent who caught the ball and fired to first for a double play that quelled the Knights’ rally.

The Eagles extended the lead in the fifth when Gray smacked a pitch to the left-center gap and raced around the bases before the ball was returned to the catcher. Gray’s bomb extended the hosts lead to 5-0.

Youngsville carved out an insurance run in the sixth inning when Rectenwald led off with a double and eventually scored on an RBI groundout from Kirby that closed out the scoring.

Rectenwald and Abraham each had two hits in the Youngsville victory while Gafner and Danielson combined for four of Ike’s five hits.

After the contest, Youngsville honored its seniors, Abraham, Swearingen, Alyssa Gentz and Kennedy Allen.

Youngsville is back in action Saturday with a scheduled doubleheader against Forest Area. The Lady Knights next play Tuesday at Mercyhurst Prep.

Starting at $2.99/week.
