Manning impresses for Eagles

YOUNGSVILLE — Youngsville was able to plate a few runs and pitcher David Manning took care of the rest.

Manning struck out 13 batters and went all seven innings during the Eagles’ 3-1 victory over the Iroquois Braves on Wednesday at Davis Street Field.

“We keep getting better every practice and it’s starting to show,” said Youngsville coach Eddie Dorunda. “Some of the plays made in the outfield by Logan (King) and Skippy (Bryce Spinks) were game-saving catches on the run. David has been lights-out all season long and now has 54 strikeouts in 27 innings pitched.”

The Braves actually opened the scoring in Wednesday’s outing, getting to Manning and the Eagles in the top of the first. A defensive error with two outs extended the inning and Iroquois’ Cole Bennett made it hurt with an RBI double to put the Braves up early.

Youngsville remained close and eventually broke through to take the lead for good in the bottom of the third inning.

James Johnson and Manning led off with walks before Cole Johnson drove a double to right field that scored James Johnson and tied the game. Manning also attempted to score on the play but was thrown out on a close call at home.

Two batters later, that lead finally came as Talon Mesel connected on an RBI single that plated Cole Johnson to make it 2-1. Moments later, Braydon Baker followed with an RBI double to bring home Mesel with what would prove to be the last run of the game.

“Offensively we were more aggressive than we have been and went to the plate with a purpose,” said Dorunda. “That helped cut down on the strikeouts. Cole Johnson had a big day and continues to have the hot hand at the plate. The boys all have a positive attitude right now and I know we’re going to have a big second half of the season.”

With the 3-1 lead, Manning made sure the Braves didn’t muster any serious threats over the last four innings. Six of his 13 strikeouts came in the final four innings, and he allowed just three base runners over that span. In addition to his 13 strikeouts, he allowed just one run on four hits and walked only one.

Youngsville (3-4) returns to the diamond Friday when it hosts a doubleheader with North Clarion. The first game will begin at 1 p.m.
