Sheffield boys remain perfect after five wins
COUDERSPORT — Sheffield’s boys track and field team went 5-0, and the Lady Wolverines won twice, on Wednesday in a six-team meet at Coudersport.
Sheffield’s makeup meet was originally with Coudersport and Port Allegany. Due to other cancellations from the last two weeks of inclement weather, Cameron County, Northern Potter and Oswayo Valley also joined in the six-team meet.
The Sheffield boys remained unbeaten on the season, improving to 9-0. They defeated host Coudersport, 77-69, Port Allegany in a nailbiter, 77-73, Cameron County, 125-24, Northern Potter, 119-22 and Oswayo Valley, 91-58.
The Lady Wolverines outscored Cameron County, 80-38 and Northern Potter, 103-19. The Sheffield girls (5-4 on the season) faced tough losses to powerhouses Coudersport, 29-117, and Port Allegany, 33-112. They also lost a heartbreaker to Oswayo Valley — a team they beaten earlier in the season — 67-68. Five wins on the season ties the Sheffield girls’ record from 2004.
For the boys, Colby Barr continued his unstoppable 2025 senior season with even more impressive numbers — getting four new personal bests on the day. Barr won the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.90 seconds. He also won the 400, just missing the Wolverines’ school record in the 400 by a tenth of a second, posting a time of 52.30.
Barr tried a new event, winning the 200 with a District 9-qualifying 23.80 seconds.
The 4×100 team that Barr runs anchor for was also victorious and ran a new season-best 46.30. Joining Barr were teammates Jack Chapman, Cayden Davis and Hayden Holden.
Holden also won the high jump.
“There were so many very important second- and third-places in all phases of the meet that got us the success we have been so close to for so long,” said Sheffield coach Jason Snell. “Jumping, throwing, distance events and hurdles — everyone chipped in to make it possible to finally take down the mighty Coudersport and Port Allegany.
“We have been so close so many times over the past four years and fell so close year after year,” added Snell. “With all the emotions of losing our school and the hard, hard work we have put in these past five years to build a program to this caliber, it’s just so bittersweet for these kids. The seniors and juniors who stuck it out through the thick and thin and believed. The ones that never gave up on us. Tonight was so special.”
Though the Lady Wolverines may not have had any individual winners, they did have some outstanding performances all around; in particular, senior Madison Connolly had three new PRs and placed in all three throwing events.
Sophomore Madison Snell had strong showings in the discus and shot put.
Senior hurdler Sarah Hoffman “posted great times and placed high in both hurdle events,” said Coach Snell.
“So much good for so many great kids tonight,” he said. “The boys finally clearing the hurdle over Port and Coudy, the girls tying the school record for wins, and Colby Barr is just on another planet right now; how he keeps getting faster is beyond me, but boy are we so loving it and enjoying it. To eclipse the 11-second mark in the 100 meters is a rare and amazing feat in high school athletics. Kalil Slaughter’s state championship-winning time in the 100 in 2012 was a 10.85… What an amazing show Colby is putting on this year. Buckle up, ’cause it isn’t over yet.”
Sheffield returns to action on Tuesday on Wolverine Mountain against non-league, cross-district Union City and Northern Tier League’s Cameron County.
“Union City has a great squad and will be a tough opponent to keep this unbeaten streak alive,” said Coach Snell, “but we believe in ourselves and maximum efforts will be given to keep this storybook ending for Sheffield High School going.”
