Sheffield earns double sweep in last first track meet

DUKE CENTER — Sheffield’s track and field teams secured a double sweep Tuesday in their last-ever first meet of the season. In the last year of Sheffield High School, the Wolverines opened with sweeps of Oswayo Valley and host Otto-Eldred.

Sheffield’s boys came out victorious over Otto 88-62 and over Oswayo 99-41. The Lady Wolverines completed the double sweep with a 91-47 win over Otto and a 72-68 nail-biter over OV.

“I am so proud of all of our team’s efforts, but I am so proud of the girls and unbelievably happy for them,” said Sheffield coach Jason Snell. “So many times in the last four years, we (the Lady Wolverines) have been on the opposite end of those close meets with tough teams. Through returning leadership, some new athletic faces, and some ladies stepping out of their comfort zone and competing in events they wouldn’t normally, they persevered and the award was in their favor last evening.”

Sheffield had two District 9 qualifiers in the meet — one on the girls side and one on the boys.

Sophomore Madison Snell wasted no time punching her return ticket to the D9 Championships with a meet-winning time of 13.15 seconds in the 100-meter dash (ahead of the qualifying standard of 13.24).

Sheffield’s boys 4×100 relay will be making a return trip to districts, but this time with a couple of new faces. The team of junior Jack Chapman, freshman Cayden Davis, junior Hayden Holden and senior Colby Barr crossed the finish line first with the D9-qualifying time of 47.40 seconds (with two-tenths of a second to spare).

Other overall winners on the boys side were Barr in the 100 and 400 in 11.80 and a 54.80, respectively, Cayden Davis in the 200 (24.20), James Chapman the 110 hurdles (20.0), Chase Fetzeck the 300 hurdles (50.10), and Aamond Bowman the high jump (5-6).

The Wolverines continued their relay dominance from the past few years, winning all three; the team of Fetzeck, Travis Childress, Marc Lewis and Emre Morgan won the 4×800 with a time of 10:16. Fetzeck, Bowman, Jack Chapman and Barr won the 4×400 in 4:09.

In the girls sweep, overall winners for Sheffield also included Dajayna Thomas in the 200 (30.0), Chloe Robinson the high jump (4-0), Madison Connolly the discus (64-9) and Connolly placed in the other two throwing events.

Also having relay success on the ladies side were the 4×100 team of Sarah Hoffman, Thomas, Raelyn Wightman and Madison Snell winning with a time of 56.90. The 4×400 team of Miciah Kelley, Tymber Barr, Wightman and Katie Finch were also the overall meet winners with a winning time of 5:32.

“For a season of so much emotion, I couldn’t have drawn up a better performance to start off the year for these amazing kids to grow some confidence going forward,” said Coach Snell.

The Wolverines return home to Wolverine Mountain today to host Johnsonburg and cross-county Youngsville in a nonleague tri-meet.
