Sheffield’s boys track and field team is 4-0 after a sweep on Thursday of Johnsonburg and Youngsville in a tri-meet on Wolverine Mountain at Sheffield High School. The Lady Wolverines split and are 3-1 overall.
Senior Colby Barr put on a clinic, qualifying for the District 9 championship meet in two more events in the Sheffield boys’ 72-60 win over Johnsonburg and 91-40 defeat of Youngsville.
Barr won the 100-meter dash in 11.20 seconds (qualifying standard is 11.64) and 400 in 53.24 (that qualifying standard being 54.50). He also ran anchor on both of the winning 4×100 and 4×400 relay teams. The 4×100 team had already punched their ticket to the meet, but dropped their season-best time by almost a second, winning on Thursday in 46.54. Barr’s teamates included Jack Chapman, Cayden Davis, and Hayden Holden. The winning 4×400 relay team dropped their season-best down nearly six seconds to 4:03.42.
Other tri-meet winners for the Wolverines included Davis winning the 200 in 24.24, Marc Lewis the mile (5:29.00), Alex Marfink shot put (35-0.25), and Emre Morgan discus (104-0.5).
The javelin event was not competed in and scored as uncontested. The head meet official deemed the all-grass runway potentially dangerous with it being soaked and muddy.
Youngsville winners were Ethan Beers, sweeping the jumping events, winning high jump (5-10), triple jump (40-10), and long jump (20-7). Chase Myers swept the hurdle events, winning in the 110 high hurdles in 16.52 and the 300 intermediates in 43.87.
For the Lady Wolverines, who defeated Youngsville 96-31 and lost to J’burg 88-42, winners included Sarah Hoffman in the 200 (30.65) and Dajayna Thomas the 400 (1:14.00).
The Lady Wolverines’ 4×800 relay team of Lily Richards, Peyton Heeter, Addisen Heeter, and Alanna Warrior was victorious with a winning time of 15:31.04.
Youngsville had a pair of tri-meet winners. Katie Upton won the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.40 while teammate Cassidy Britton swept all three distance running events. Britton won the 800 (2:45.52), the mile (6:00), and the two-mile run (13:16.46).
The girls’ meet also uncontested the javelin event.
“Colby Barr was on fire tonight,” said Sheffield coach Jason Snell. “I have had the pleasure of coaching this young man since Little League in many sports and a lot of them alongside my dear friend, his father, Mike, and to watch him grow into his own this year and take off has been so exciting. Getting to see first-hand, the kind of work and effort Colby has put in over the years and continuing on this dominant senior year — in all of his sports — isn’t the least bit surprising, but is so very rewarding to watch. He is an inspiration to his teammates that hard work can and will pay off.
“After week one of our meets this season, our Wolverines continue to show we have something to prove,” said Coach Snell. “We are using the school closure as a motivator for sure and the fun and success in track as a method of healing together. These kids are going to keep getting better and better. We know what is next and I believe we are more prepared for it than ever.”
The Wolverines will travel to Coudersport on Tuesday to take on the host Falcons and Port Allegany — the meet likely to decide the Northern Tier League champion.
“We have been so close to winning the NTL the last three seasons,” said Coach Snell. “We know what it is going to take. We know before we even board the bus we are down 0-9 in the pole vault to both, and we also know this is our last chance for this amazing opportunity. Together, we will give it our best effort and that’s all I can ask from these kids; their best effort and doing it together, a team-first mentality. The 2025 Wolverines are so unselfish and are starving, hungry for what we know can be ours.”
