Sudbury evens semifinal series with Jackals

SUDBURY, Ontario — With less than nine minutes remaining Sunday in Game 2 of their Basketball Super League semifinal series, the Jamestown Jackals had their sights set on another upset.

The top-seeded Sudbury Five had other ideas.

Sudbury went on an 11-2 run to go up 107-98 with 6:00 remaining and held off Jamestown late to even their best-of-five series at a game apiece with a 121-116 victory at the Sudbury Community Arena.

Game 3 will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Jamestown Community College’s Physical Education Complex.

Charlie Marquardt led the Five with 30 points, including five 3-pointers, while JD Miller scored 24 points and Duane Notice added 20. Ja’myrin Jackson, the league’s leading scorer during the regular season, came off the bench and scored just 3 points for Sudbury.

Derrick Colter led the Jackals with 30 points and Devante Jamison added 22.

Jamestown led 31-25 after the first quarter and by as many as 10 with 8:35 left in the second quarter before the Five cut their deficit to 56-53 at halftime.

Miller converted a three-point play early in the third quarter to make it a 56-56 game. The Jackals led by as many as eight later in the quarter, but Sudbury led 90-87 entering the final 12 minutes.

Marquardt hit a 3-pointer with 11:26 left to make it 93-87 in favor of the Five before the teams traded baskets. Evan Hinson then hit a 3-pointer to pull the Jackals within three and Colter followed with a layup to make it a 95-94 game. After Notice hit a free throw, Pickett scored on a layup to tie the game at 96-all and set up the final eight minutes.

Jamestown shot better from the field and from beyond the arc, but Sudbury again won the battle at the foul line where it shot 35 of 46 compared to Jamestown’s 17 of 21.

The game featured eight ties and 13 lead changes. The Jackals’ bench outscored the Five’s 71-26.

After Game 3 on Wednesday, Game 4 will be Friday at 7 p.m. back at Jamestown CC. If a Game 5 is necessary, it would be next Sunday at 4 p.m. back in Sudbury.
