Youngsville softball rolls past Oswayo Valley in 19-9 win

YOUNGSVILLE — Marli Rectenwald’s bases-clearing three-run triple helped the Youngsville softball team to a 19-9, six-inning victory over Oswayo Valley on a chilly Saturday morning at Youngsville High School.

The Lady Eagles were able to take advantage of 18 walks and five hit batsmen to roll to their first victory of the young season.

Oswayo Valley’s first two batters of the game reached and scored to give the visitors an early lead. That advantage wouldn’t hold up long as Youngsville got four walks and four hit batsmen in the first inning to score six runs with just a single hit and take a 6-2 lead. Hailey Gray had an RBI single in the first while Peytynn Kirby, Alyssa Goss, Haley Kent and Rectenwald also brought runs home with their plate appearances.

The Eagles continued to score without having to put the ball in play during the second inning. Desirae Merritt was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Caitlyn Pikna drew a bases loaded walk to make it 8-2.

The Green Wave were threatening in the top of the third before a stellar defensive effort got the Eagles out of a jam. Gray caught a line drive shot at shortstop before turning and throwing to third baseman Ireland Abraham for an inning ending double play.

After the fine play in the field, Gray led off the bottom of the third with a hard-hit triple. She would eventually score on Abraham’s groundout and the Eagles had a 9-2 lead that would hold until the fifth.

In the top of the fifth, the wheels began to fall off for Youngsville’s defense. A total of four errors led to six Oswayo Valley runs and the once large lead was just 9-8 entering the bottom of the fifth.

The Eagles got two of the runs back during that at-bat with Gray and Abraham leading off with walks. Gray would later score on an RBI hit from Kamden Swearingen and Abraham scored on an RBI fielder’s choice from Kirby.

Oswayo Valley scored its ninth run in the top of the sixth, turning a leadoff double into a single run.

From there, the Eagles made sure they wouldn’t have to play defense again, plating eight runs in the bottom of the sixth to end the game early via the ten-run rule.

Pikna and Rectenwald walked and Gray singled to load the bases with nobody out. Abraham and Swearingen brought home runs as did Kirby after a deep sacrifice fly to center. A Goss RBI groundout and a steal of home by Swearingen made it 16-9 and set up Rectenwald’s walk-off hit.

After three straight walks, the sophomore came to the plate and smacked a pitch down the right field line that rolled long enough to clear the bases and send Youngsville to its first win of the year.

Gray and Abraham scored four runs each for the winners and Gray was 3-for-4 at the plate. Rectenwald drove in a team-best four runs and Kirby added three RBIs of her own.

Youngsville returns to action on Monday when it travels to Union City.
