‘Retrospective Glance’ is an art ‘adventure’

John Pearson carefully works on a painting to bring his creative vision to life. His dedication to artistic exploration is at the heart of 'A Retrospective Glance,' his upcoming exhibition at the Crary Art Gallery.

The Crary Art Gallery in Warren is hosting “A Retrospective Glance,” an art exhibition by John Pearson, today and Sunday.

This showcase marks Pearson’s second solo exhibition, following his debut at the Reg Lenna Center for the Arts in Jamestown in the early 2000s.

Pearson, a native of Warren, was born and raised in the heart of the community. His parents, Sandra and Clarence Pearson, were pillars of our local artistic scene, and they instilled in him a deep appreciation for the arts.

His mom, in particular, dedicated her life to nurturing John’s talent, ensuring he had access to skilled mentors and a supportive community.

Pearson’s artistic journey began with his photography, which captured the historic charm of downtown Warren. His portfolio expanded to include images of the Warren County Summer Music School and performances from the Yankee Bush Productions music series.

Photos submitted to the Times Observer John Pearson, a dedicated artist from Warren, brings his unique vision to life through his art. His solo exhibition, 'A Retrospective Glance,' at the Crary Art Gallery celebrates his artistic journey and deep-rooted connection to the local arts community.

Over time, his work grew and evolved, encompassing mixed-media creations and folk-art sculptures that reflect his ever-changing artistic vision.

Among Pearson’s most beloved works is “Bob,” a widely recognized piece created in collaboration with his friend and mentor, Michelle Munksgaurd. Through her business, Icyy Ink, Munksgaurd helped brand “Bob” merchandise, extending its reach and impact.

Munksgaard, John’s collaborator and mentor, shared her thoughts on working with him: “Creating art with John is always a joy and an adventure!” She added, “I never know what John and I are going to get ourselves into, what we will create, or who we will collaborate with.”

Another well-known piece, “Tree Frog,” further exemplifies Pearson’s distinctive artistic style.

Stephanie Scutella, a lifelong friend of Pearson, coordinates the exhibit. Her bond with him was first formed through the friendship of their mothers. Following Sandra Pearson’s passing last year, Scutella took it upon herself to ensure Pearson continues to have the opportunities and experiences his mother envisioned for him. Her dedication to supporting his artistic journey is a testament to the lasting impact of his mom’s love and guidance.

Pearson and his mother shared a special connection with the Crary Art Gallery, having spent many years proctoring together at the venue. This upcoming exhibition was not just a celebration of Pearson’s artistic evolution but a significant event that pays homage to the influences that shaped his creative path. “A Retrospective Glance” is a unique opportunity for visitors to explore Pearson’s diverse body of work and witness the artistic legacy he continues to build.

The exhibition will feature special events, including an Open Gallery with Pearson today March from noon to 4 p.m. and an Artist’s Tea on Sunday from noon to 2 p.m.

Starting at $2.99/week.
